sinus infection question? I was diagnosed with a sinus infection, the doctor gave me the antibotic Septa, I just got off Flagyl due to a vaginal infection, how likely am I to get another vaginal infection? And if I have one, would this antibotic get rid of it? I am afraid to take this antibotic because I don't need another vaginal infection

snakebread replied: "Please take your antibiotic! But ALSO eat a lot of yogurt with active cultures, or supplement with acidophilus which you can buy from your health food store. This will replace the "good" bacteria which may be killed by the antibiotic. Flagyl is often used to treat bacterial vaginosis, which is a different type of bacterium than you get in your sinuses. So there is probably no relation."

kansas8099 replied: "the antibiotic could possibly lead to another yeast infection (they kill off the 'good' bacteria that protect from a fungal yeast infection). Does your doctor know that you just got off Flagyl? he may considering continuing that for the duration of your antibiotic treatment or prescribe Diflucan to help prevent another yeast infection. If he does neither, consider taking over the counter Acidophilus (found in the vitamin aisle), this helps to replace the healthy bacteria that the antibiotic can wipe out."

What could be causing the ringing in my ear, and will it resolve on its own? A few things could be causing this, and I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. It started last night, and when I woke up in the middle of the night it was still ringing, as well as this morning. Getting a Doctor to check this out isn't an option due to lack of insurance, lack of local audiologist, etc . 1.) About a month ago I was involved in a car accident, and I read that whiplash can cause ringing in the ears, plus I was given 300 mg of Ibuprophen. I woke up with the ringing about a week and a half after the accident, but it cleared up later that morning. 2.) I was given a per ion for flagyl for a bacterial infection I had, and then after I finished that, a week later came down with a sinus infection and was given azythromycin. I also read that antibiotics can cause this ringing, and it's not often I take 2 courses of antibiotics back-to-back. 3.) Probably not likely, but on Saturday I got my second hole in my ears peirced. The lobe, not anything else. 4.) I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, and am on birth control and spironalactione as a diuretic. I read also about how these can cause it. 5.) Friday night I was out with a friend and we went to a club and when we left, our hearing was a little fuzzy. I haven't had that since middle school as this was the first time I'd ever been to a club, and the first time I'd been around loud music like that since like, 8th grade (I'm 23). Is it most likely a combination of all of these things, and should I be worried?

Candida Diet & Post Nasal Drip? Does anyone know if the Candida Diet can help stop post nasal drip (PND) or chronic sinus infections? My doc has a theory that my PND may be related to yeast in my body since the only time my PND stopped was when I was on Flagyl for a yeast infection. So she put me on the diet but I've yet to find any research saying the diet helps PND specifically.

huggz replied: "I have never heard the theory in many years of nursing, but it wont hurt to try it...good luck"

Bao N replied: "what?!"

nguyen replied: "i don't get it lol sry"

michaelbellman replied: "You can have a more direct effect and help with getting the germs "OUT". To relieve the symptoms and help your nose, try a saline nasal rinse (not a spray.) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It soothes with warmth, it draws out the entire gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean, but without the eye stinging). Buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot You can do this as often as you like with no side effects. There's even a travel-bottle style for use over the sink. You dont need a pre ion for this therapy. If you live in a state like mine, theyve pretty much outlawed sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis"

Antibiotics taken during week of inactive pills, chances of pregnancy? Ok, I'm driving myself crazy over this, here goes: I took the antibiotic starting October 24 through October 30th (Flagyl for a bacterial infection my gyn. prescribed. Then took an antibiotic for bladder infection (Bactrim, reg. doctor prescribed) from October 31 thru November 4th which was during my inactive pills (Ortho Tricyclen Lo) I got my withdrawal bleed on time, Nov. 7. Lasted barely 3 days. Nov 11th I switched birth control to Loestrin 24. Had unprotected sex w/ husband on Nov 9th, 11, & 12th. Had random brown spotting from Nov. 22-23. Unprotected sex on 24th. I have had some really sore breasts, wanting 2 go to bed 1-2 hours earlier than normal, wake up sweaty& not sure if this would be related but I now have what I think is a sinus infection (going on 3 days now). I am just wondering if the brown spotting could have been implantation or just from starting new pills. Oh & was no gap in between the birth control pills. With antibiotics & new pills, confused. Period due 1 week. Also, I am a newlywed so not planning on being pregnant so soon, but would be happy if I turned out to be!

Melissa S replied: "Most antibiotics do not interfere with bc, only a few do. Your best option is to give your pharmacy a call and ask if the ones you took could have affected it. I had lots of spotting my first few months on loestrin 24 but it stopped after the third month so I would guess it's just the bc. I had spotting if a missed a pill, or even took a pil a few hours late at first. After the first few months of transition I did really well on it and it worked just fine for me. Little note though, I did get pregnant my first month off so it can leave your system quickly when you are ready ;)"

Doodlestuff replied: "Antibiotics can stay in your system for as much as 2 weeks after you quit taking them, but not all antibiotics interfere with BC pills. So, yes, I think there is some possibility that it COULD be a problem. Now, I think you likely just have a sinus infection, but do use added protection if you absolutely can not get pregnant. Loestrin is not quite as effective as a birth control as other medications because of the lower dosage of estrogen. I had the same experience as Melissa above. You have my sympathy. I get horrid sinus infections."

So I am puzzled by this and so far the doctors can't provide an answer. Please help.? I have been ill for over a month now. It started with a sinus infection. I was put on an antibiotic which didn't completely clear it up but did help. With the antibiotic I started experiencing nauseau anxiety and loss of appetite. The antibiotic was only a zpack however so it was done soon. Following the antibiotic I got a funny feeling on my left side by my belly button. I ended up having to start a new antibiotic and the discomfort grew worse. After stopping the antibiotic my symptoms of the abdominal discomfort nauseau and loss of appetite remained however a few days later this turned into horrible abdominal pain, occassional diahrreha and soft stools with the occasional constipated feeling. the doc thought I could have c difficle or geardia so they put me on flagyl. Finished the flagly appetite has returned and nauseau mostly gone but the same painful off and on discomfort is over my intestines around my belly button. Any advice or ideas what it could be? I'm not looking for a diagnosis just some advice from someone who may have had something similar. I do have an appointment to see a gastrointestinologist but its a couple weeks away. I do feel better just not well.

Vietnam Veteran replied: "I don't think this is the place for a diagnosis, but if it were me i'd find a gastroenterologist and get checked out. This could be a serious problem,so don't wait!"

shortstuff replied: "I have no idea what is causing you such abdominal discomfort & I think it's time for you to see a gastroenterologist. Have your doctor refer you to one."

lisa l replied: "I had very similar symptoms when i was finally diagnosed with gallstones"

donna D replied: "PLEASE ask your doctor to send you to a doctor to run a scope down your throat to your tummy to see if you have ulcers on the inside or outside of your stomach. I suffered the same thing or the same symptoms anyway. I ended up having the ulcerations inside and outside of my stomach thus creating bleeding, nausea, cramps, sweats, etc. I ended up in emergency and stayed for 11 days in the hospital with no liquids, or food for 9 days. I V's only. Do not take chances! I took Protonix and it worked like a miracle. 1 side effect: Protonix cuts off the acid production to your food in your stomach which helps you digest your food, thus helping to create a new lining to the stomach in order to heal itself. You may suffer from constipation, however peach nectar, fruit, etc. will help keep the fluids in your system and help you stay free of discomfort."

fred replied: "This is not an easy problem to sort out. First, you should be getting better slowly. If you start getting worse, or see blood in your stools, then go back to your doctor because you may have serious problems. If you are getting better hopefully things will turn out well and the gastroenterologist is there to make sure nothing is being missed. Now, what could be the problem? I will assume it is probably associated with your antibiotic use, but this is a guess. The most likely problems are adverse effects of antibiotics, deranged bowel bacteria balance, irritable bowel, or incompletely cleared Clostridium difficile infection. Other possible problems could be; coincidental colonic problems including diverticulitis or another type of colon inflamation like ulcerative colitis. Rarely antibiotics can cause pancreatitis with upper abdominal pain and liver inflamation with aches in the right upper abdomen. Many other things are possible but you need to have a doctors evaluation to decide if those things are even likely. see explanation below. The antibiotic azithromycin, which is in the Z-pac, has adverse effects that include diarrhea, abdominal pains with cramps, nausea and vomiting. Sometimes azithromycin will also allow an infection with Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) to develop. C. difficile infection can also be made worse by other antibiotics and can be treated with Flagyl. Medications that prevent diarrhea (like Immodium) can make the C. difficle infection worse because they prevent you from getting rid of the toxins in your colon that the C. difficile poisons you with. The C. difficle infection can return after flagyl treatment in up to one quarter of the people, and has to get retreated. If you had a bowel infection with C. diffile this can cause the bowel to become irritable and can cause persistent discomfort. This can last for weeks but should be always be getting better. Other problems have to be ruled out. All antibiotics can upset the balance between the different kinds of bacteria in your bowels. If the antibiotic kills off certain bacteria then other more resistant bacteria will temporarily greatly increase in numbers. These, now, more numerous bacteria can upset your bowels causing mild inflamation with bloating, diarrhea and cramps. C. difficile is one of those bacteria that can increase in numbers if its competitors are killed by the antibiotics you had taken. The gastroenterologist you are to see has to make sure that you do not have another problem that by coincidence developed at the same time as you took the antibiotics. Things like colon inflamation for other reasons, like ulcerative colitis or other bowel problems that may have flared like diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Also he has to make sure that you are not taking other medications that could be contributing or prolonging your problem. Other illnesses you may have can have abdominal symptoms and this has to get investigated. there are many (hundreds) of possible causes of abdominal discomfort that can be sorted out by getting a more thorough medical and medication history and doing a proper physical exam and perhaps some tests depending on your symptoms that persist when you see your gastroenterologist."

If you have two types of infections and are prescribed antibiotics for one could it end up treating...? Question. I just started Flagyl for a PH imbalance. I have to take it for 7 days. Last week I felt a congestion/ sinus infection starting and now started the pre ion. When you have 2 different types of infection and take an antibiotic will it cure what it is specified for, cure both or randomly work on one or the other? I dont feel congested today, but I want to make sure this pre ion is working where it is supposed to be. Note Im not trying to self medicate. I want to make sure the pre ion will work for the ph imbalance and not be affected by another infection I might be having in my sinuses

Please help. What could this be? So this all started nearly 2 months ago. I originally got sick with a sinus infection and was put on 2 diff antibiotics to clear it up. Between the antibiotics I developed this funny discomfort on my left side by my belly button. Ended up getting really painful where I thought my entire side was going to explode. I was also having occasional diarreaha and loose bm with nausea and loss of appetite I lost about 17lbs. The doctor thought that it might be c difficle or a parasite so they put me on flagyl for 10 days. symptoms slightly improved on the 8th day. Now its weeks later and I am still having pain/discomfort on my left side near my belly button. Sometimes worse than others but its always there although not nearly as bad as originally. Appetite is back but nauseau still occurs off and on. So far I have had blood work, x-ray, catscan, and stool testing. All tests have come back normal. Could it be gallstones. I am having a colonoscopy in a few weeks. I am only in my early 20's.

huggz replied: "I can't think of any reason other than irritable bowel or Chrons disease. the pain from an inflamed gall bladder would not be on the left, with that the pain is on the right side just under the ribs. The pain for gall bladder problems can be very very severe too."

Should I be worried about having leukemia? I have diverticulitis and just had an attack 3-10-09. I have had several attacks and was supposed to have surgery next week until I got my pre-op labs back. I also have a fatty liver. My spleen hurts off and on but on 2 ct scans this year, no problems with anything. My doctor also checked my spleen and liver yesterday and said they are not enlarged. My problem is my blood work. My white count on 4/1 was 11.0, on 4/7 it was 14.9, yesterday 12.5. (I am currently on Flagyl for diverticulitis.) My LAP score yesterday was 98. My lymph's and monocytes have been low on previous blood tests but lymph's were 15.1 yesterday. Neutrophils are high at 74 I am told. They all have been like this before (in the past 2 years since being diagnosed with diverticulitis) and then I had absolutely normal labs in November 2008 (when I was not sick with anything at all). I must mention right now I have a horrible cold/sinus infection and I am just 5 weeks out of having a diverticulitis attack. My MPV was 7.1 which I am told is low. With the LAP score I'm scared. I am awaiting blood test for IGC, IGE, IGM and BCR/ABL1. Should I be worried?

awesome, cool, super, amazing GUY replied: "yes its a disease that can kill you!"

where is everybody? replied: "diverticulitis isn't leukemia. you have problems with your bowels. it could cause your white cell count to lower but that doesn't mean you have leukemia. i'm sure the doctors would have told you."

elina replied: "ok diverticulitis isn't leukemia"

What causes lower right abdominal pain, twitchs in feet & ringing in ears? Since September I had been on several antibiotics for a sinus infections. I hate medicine and I am very sensitive. I have been in Ceftin, Avelox, Augmentin, Doxycyline, Flagyl and Zithromax. I also had 2 steroid shots and one methylprednisone pack. I took the Doxycyline and the flagyl in November due to getting so sick to my stomach, vommiting, high fever and a white count of 17,000. I also had an electrolyte imbalance for which I was told to eat a banana everyday. Since that time, it is now February, I have had the most unbearable lower right abdomominal pain and twitches in my feet. I have been to tho OB and the gastro both of which say antidepressants. Thing is, I am NOT depressed. I am losing weight because the pain is os bad. The Cat Scan showed possible PID but the OB says no as my right ovary was removed. Gastro put me on Miralax and Probiotics. I am really wondering if all those antibiotics could have damaged my nervous system. The Avelox I stopped after 2 days because it was so strong my jaw almost locked up and I got terribly dizzy. I am just so sick of these doctors trying to make me feel like it is all in my head when they haven't really tested for anything.

Western US Doc replied: "A common cause of lower right quadrant abdominal pain is appendicitis. Gas can also be a chronic cause. If you have been eating a banana every day since September, you may have increased your potassium levels (an electrolyte) too much. High potassium can cause twitching and muscle spasms as well as palpitations and other symptoms. Have you had your blood tests run again? With all the medications you have been on, it is quite possible that your natural resident bacteria (those which normally live inside of us) is all thrown off. That is the reason for the probiotics. These are pills that basically contain replacements for our natural gut bacteria and yeasts to try to get you rebalanced. Extreme stress can trigger gut issues as well - IBS is one example. Before you strt some antidepressant or other new medication, get off all the meds for a few weeks, except the probiotics and see how you feel then. Also, careful with the bananas, High potassium levels are dangerous."

Duricef antibiotics? I have bacterial vaginitis. Before my doctor prescribed Flagyl. i have a full bottle of Duricef that my doctor gave me for a sinus and throat infection and ended up not needing to take it. I have started taking these Duricef yesterday. I know that Duricef is for bacteria infections but is it for the same bacteria infection I have? Is it going to work or do I need to see my doctor?

Joseph replied: "If you stopped taking Duricef, at least for 24 hours, I see no problem in starting now with flygyl. But if you are worried perhaps calling your doctor is better."
